Professor Brian Harvey is a professor in the subject group Pharmacology at North-West University, where he is affiliated with the School of Pharmacy, Division of Pharmacology, and the Centre of Excellence for Pharmaceutical Sciences. He holds the qualifications BPharm, BSc (Hons-Pharmacology), MSc and PhD. His research interests centre on behavioural neuroscience and neuro- and psychopharmacology, with a particular focus on anxiety and stress-related disorders, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia. Professor Harvey has developed and applied a number of in vivo animal models of human psychiatric disorders to investigate mechanisms of synaptic and cellular signalling and their relevance to the pathology and pharmacology of these conditions.
He serves as Professor and Program Leader of the South African Medical Research Council Unit on Risk and Resilience in Mental Disorders at North-West University. In addition to his primary appointment at North-West University, Professor Harvey holds honorary professor positions, including a five-year appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town from 2026 to 2030, an honorary professorship in the Faculty of Health at Deakin University in Australia, and an extraordinary professorship in the Department of Psychiatry at Stellenbosch University from 2026 to 2028.
