Dr Britta Rennkamp is a senior researcher at the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) at the University of Cape Town. Her research focuses on climate policy and technology in developing countries and the links between poverty, inequality, energy and mitigation of climate change. She has contributed to the scholarship of Science and Technology Policy Studies in the field of climate change and energy in the Global South. Her work has analysed renewable energy, coal and nuclear programmes, carbon taxation, green industrial and innovation policies in developing countries. She has published papers and book chapters on integrating policies for emissions reductions, energy supply and sustainable development in Africa and Latin America. Her current research investigates the bidirectional relationships between climate policy and social inequality informing Just Energy Transitions in Sub-Saharan Africa.
She has managed sixteen research and consulting projects and conducted multi-stakeholder engagements in climate policy processes in Germany, South Africa, Mozambique, Colombia, Peru and Brazil. Rennkamp is co-directing the ARUA Centre of Excellence in Climate and Development and leading work on climate governance. Prior to joining UCT she worked for the German International Cooperation (GIZ) in Brazil and the German Development Institute (DIE) in Germany. She holds a PhD in Science Technology Policy Studies from the University of Twente and a Diplom/MPhil in Regional Sciences of Latin America from the University of Cologne. She has eighteen years of international work experience in sustainable development research, consulting and teaching. Rennkamp has received an award from the South African Wind Energy Association for distinguished academic research and holds a Y-rating from the National Research Foundation of South Africa.
