Rate My Professor Bronwyn Hemsley

Professor Bronwyn Hemsley is Head of School of Health Sciences at the University of Newcastle. She is a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist with extensive experience in the field. Professor Hemsley holds a B.App.Sc in Speech Pathology (1988) and a PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders (2008), both from the University of Sydney. She completed an NHMRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Queensland until 2012.

Her research focuses on augmentative and alternative communication, communication support for adults with developmental disabilities and complex communication needs, and improving communicative environments in hospital settings. Professor Hemsley has held academic appointments at the University of Newcastle and the University of Technology Sydney, where she served as Professor of Speech Pathology and Head of Speech Pathology. She has received recognition including the 2023 Sax Institute Research Action Award and an international accolade in 2016 for her contributions to speech pathology research. Professor Hemsley leads initiatives in speech pathology education and research impact within health sciences.
