Professor Bruce Biccard is Professor and Second Chair in the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town. He serves as Director of Global Surgery Research at the University of Cape Town. His medical training includes an MBChB from the University of Cape Town, followed by postgraduate qualifications of MMedSci, FCA(SA), FFARCSI, and a PhD. He registered as a medical practitioner in 2001.
Professor Biccard’s research focuses on perioperative medicine, surgical outcomes, and global surgery. He leads international collaborative efforts through the African Perioperative Research Group network and has directed the African Surgical Outcomes Study and the ASOS-2 Trial, while co-leading the African Covid-19 Critical Care Outcomes Study. He is the Immediate Past President of the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists and Editor in Chief of the Southern African Journal of Anaesthesia and Analgesia. In 2025, he was recognised as an A-rated researcher by the National Research Foundation of South Africa. A key publication is the African Surgical Outcomes Study, published in The Lancet in 2018. Professor Biccard advocates for equity and safe surgery and anaesthesia across Africa through his leadership in perioperative and critical care research.
