Bruce Gaulin is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at McMaster University. He earned a B.Sc. in Physics with Great Distinction from McGill University in 1981 and a Ph.D. in Physics from McMaster University in 1986. He holds the positions of Distinguished University Professor since 2017 and Brockhouse Chair in the Physics of Materials since 1998. His research centers on experimental condensed matter physics, with a focus on quantum materials, geometrically frustrated magnets, quantum spin liquids, neutron and x-ray scattering techniques, and related instrumentation development. He has led multiple Canada Foundation for Innovation projects to advance neutron scattering facilities at the McMaster Nuclear Reactor and other sites.
Gaulin has contributed to studies of multipolar order, high-temperature superconductivity, and new quantum magnets through crystal synthesis and characterization at major facilities. He received the Brockhouse Medal from the Canadian Association of Physicists in 2011 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2010. He maintains an active research group and has served in leadership roles related to neutron beam science in Canada.
