About Bruce

Professor Bruce Rubidge is a Distinguished Professor at the Evolutionary Studies Institute of the University of the Witwatersrand. He holds a BScHons and MSc, as well as a PhD from the University of Port Elizabeth. Rubidge joined the University of the Witwatersrand in 1990 and has led palaeontological research and teaching there for more than three decades. He previously served as Head of the Palaeontology Department at the National Museum in Bloemfontein and as head of the Bernard Price Institute for Palaeontological Research. Rubidge was the first Director of the Evolutionary Studies Institute and has also directed the DST/NRF Centre of Excellence for Palaeosciences.

His research focuses on basal therapsid taxonomy and palaeobiology as well as stratigraphy and basin analysis, with particular emphasis on the Karoo Supergroup fossil record. Rubidge is an NRF A-rated scientist and has authored or co-authored more than 200 research publications in internationally accredited journals. He directs the Karoo Origins fossil centre in Graaff-Reinet, where he was born and raised. Rubidge maintains active involvement in palaeontological fieldwork, student training, and institutional leadership at the University of the Witwatersrand.
