About Calvin

Professor Calvin CP Pang, also known as Pang Chi Pui Calvin, is the S. H. Ho Research Professor of Visual Sciences and Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received a BSc (Honours) in Biochemistry from the University of London in 1978 and a DPhil from the University of Oxford in 1982. He joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1983 as Lecturer in Chemical Pathology, advancing to Senior Lecturer in 1992. In 1998, he transferred to the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, where he was appointed Professor in 2008 and received the S. H. Ho Professorship in Visual Sciences in 2010. He served as Chairman of the Department from 2012 to 2015 and has been Director of the Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong since 2012.

Professor Pang’s research focuses on the molecular genetics and genomics of complex and monogenic eye diseases, including primary open-angle glaucoma, primary angle-closure glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, myopia, uveitis, diabetic retinopathy, and keratoconus, employing techniques such as genome-wide association studies, whole-exome sequencing, and gene mapping. He has authored or co-authored more than 470 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, 25 book chapters, and edited special issues and a book, with an h-index of 72 and over 18,500 citations. He has delivered more than 300 invited lectures and served as academic assessor or reviewer for numerous international funding bodies and institutions. His honors include the China State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (second class) in 2016, the Special Achievement Award of the Chinese Ophthalmological Society in 2017, the Senior Achievement Award of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology in 2018, election as a Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology in 2018, and recognition as a 2020 ARVO Foundation Honoree. He has held editorial roles including Associate Editor of Eye and Vision and Section Editor for Visual Sciences in Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, and has contributed to numerous international consortia and professional societies in ophthalmology and visual sciences.
