About Cameron

Dr Cameron Schauer is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland, a position he has held since 2021. He is also a Doctoral Candidate at the university, with his PhD research focusing on gastric cancer, which commenced in October 2024. Schauer completed his medical training at the University of Auckland and began practising as a doctor in 2012. His clinical experience includes work at Whangarei Hospital, Auckland City Hospital (including the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit), Middlemore Hospital, Tauranga Hospital, and currently at North Shore and Waitakere Hospitals. In 2019, he completed overseas fellowship training in tissue resection and advanced interventional endoscopy at NTT Medical Centre in Tokyo, Japan.

Schauer is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Physician with particular expertise in gastroscopy and colonoscopy for the early detection and endoscopic treatment of cancers in the oesophagus, stomach, and colon. He serves as an elected member of the Executive Committee of the New Zealand Gastroenterology Society (since November 2024) and of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (since October 2024), and he is the New Zealand Gastroenterology Society Representative for the Asian-Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy (since July 2020). He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on topics including endoscopy techniques, inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer risk factors, gastric cancer prevention, and the impacts of COVID-19 on hospital presentations. Schauer contributes to teaching medical students and presents at national and international conferences on gastroenterology and endoscopy.
