About Carla

Professor Carla Houkamau is a Professor in the Department of Management and International Business and serves as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Auckland. She holds a PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Auckland and joined the Business School as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in 2007. Her prior roles at the university include Director of the Dame Mira Szászy Research Centre for Māori and Pacific Economic Development, Associate Dean Māori and Pacific Development for the Business School from 2017 to 2019, and Academic Director of the Business School Tuākana Programme from 2011 to 2018. She also serves on the University of Auckland Māori Business Leaders Awards Steering Committee.

Professor Houkamau is an award-winning researcher who received the Business School Early Career Research Excellence Award and a University of Auckland Group Excellence Award. Her work centres on intergroup relations, Māori identity, and Māori business, including development of the Multidimensional Model of Māori Identity and Cultural Engagement (MMM-ICE) and leadership of the Māori Identity and Financial Attitudes Study, supported by a Marsden grant. She has produced over eighty publications, including journal articles, conference papers, and commissioned reports. Outside the university, she acts as an Academic Adviser for Behavioural Science Aotearoa and delivers education on the impact of implicit bias on Māori communities in health and education settings. She is of Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tahu and Pākehā descent.
