About Catherine

Catherine Adams is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, affiliated with the Department of Secondary Education. Her research program examines digital technology and artificial intelligence integration in K-12 and post-secondary educational settings, along with associated ethical and pedagogical considerations. She draws on phenomenology of practice, postphenomenology, posthuman and postdigital perspectives, and sociomaterial approaches to qualitative inquiry, including methods such as interviewing objects. Additional areas of focus include K-12 computer science curriculum and computational thinking pedagogy.

Adams serves as the Vargo Teaching Chair in the Faculty of Education, the first recipient of this appointment in the faculty. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including EDU 210 Introduction to Educational Technology and EDU 570 Technology, AI, and Ethics in Education. Selected recent publications include “Empowering learners for the age of AI: An AI literacy framework for primary and secondary education” (OECD, 2025), “35 Interviews with digital objects” (De Gruyter Handbook of Digital Criminology, 2025), “Phenomenology in Action for Researching Networked Learning” (Springer, 2024), “Ethical principles for artificial intelligence in K-12 education” (Computers and Education: Artificial Intelligence, 2024), and “A technoethical framework for teachers” (Learning, Media and Technology, 2024).
