Professor Catriona Matheson is Professor in Substance Use at the University of Stirling in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport. She holds a BSc in Pharmacy, an MSc in Public Health and Health Services Research, and a PhD in Medical Sciences focused on General Practice and Primary Care. Her research specializations include the delivery of care to people who use drugs, innovative community pharmacy services, managing ageing and multi-morbidity among people who use drugs, dependence on benzodiazepines, management of polydrug use, and the application of technology to support individuals at risk of overdose. Matheson serves as an Independent Research Consultant and as Specialist Consultant in Drug Death Reviews for Aberdeen City Alcohol and Drug Partnership.
She previously chaired the Ministerial Drug Death Task Force for Scotland from July 2019 to December 2021. Matheson is a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, recognized for her contributions to pharmacy practice and drug research. Her career includes extensive grant-funded projects on topics such as overdose response teams, interventions for street benzodiazepine dependence, digital inclusion for drug death prevention, and peer-delivered harm reduction interventions. She has led or contributed to studies evaluating community pharmacy services for drug misusers, supervised consumption models, and the health impacts of responses to COVID-19 on people who use drugs.
