About Ceiridwen

Dr Ceiridwen Edwards is Senior Research Fellow in Archaeogenetics in the Department of Physical and Life Sciences at the University of Huddersfield’s School of Applied Sciences and a member of the Evolutionary Genomics Research Centre. She received her B.Sc. (Hons.) in Genetics from the University of York in 1996 and her M.Sc. in Biomolecular Archaeology from the University of Sheffield in 1998. Her Ph.D., awarded by Trinity College Dublin in 2002, examined genetic variation in domesticated cattle and wild aurochsen through ancient and modern DNA analyses. From 1999 to 2008 she was solely responsible for the Bioarchaeology Laboratory at Trinity College Dublin. Between 2009 and 2015 she worked as a Researcher in Ancient DNA Studies at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology, University of Oxford, where she secured funding to establish an ancient DNA laboratory. She joined the University of Huddersfield as Senior Research Fellow in Archaeogenetics in June 2015 and runs the university’s Ancient DNA Facility.

Her research focuses on ancient DNA applications in archaeology, including migration patterns, population genetics, animal domestication, the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition, phylogeography of European mammals, and the Romano-British to Anglo-Saxon transition. She has contributed to studies on West African ancestry in early medieval England, Bell Beaker expansion, and genomic evidence for the peopling of Sahul. Her Google Scholar profile records an h-index of 37 based on over 6,400 citations. She has led or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Nature, Science Advances, Antiquity and Genome Biology, and participates in collaborative projects examining prehistoric and historic human and animal populations.
