Professor Charles N.J. McGhee ONZM, FRSNZ, MBChB, BSc(Hons), PhD, DSc, FRCS, FRCOphth, FRANZCO is the Maurice Paykel Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland, a position he has held since 1999. He is also the founding Director of the New Zealand National Eye Centre, established in 2008. Professor McGhee studied science and medicine at the University of Glasgow, graduating with an MBChB in 1983 and a BSc(Hons) in pathology and eye pathology. He subsequently completed a PhD and was awarded a DSc. His clinical qualifications include fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
Professor McGhee specialises in corneal diseases and has an extensive record of research in ophthalmology, with hundreds of publications and thousands of citations. He has served as Vice President of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis. His contributions have been recognised with election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and appointment as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
