Charles D. Scales, Jr., MD, MSHS, FACS is Associate Dean for Clinical Research Initiatives and Associate Professor of Urology and Population Health Sciences at Duke University. He earned his MD from Duke University School of Medicine in 2004 and completed his urology residency at Duke University Medical Center. He subsequently completed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at the University of California, Los Angeles, receiving advanced training in health services research, health policy, and quality of care, and holds an MSHS degree.
Dr. Scales maintains a longstanding research focus on the epidemiology and patient care for urinary stone disease. His work has included redefining the epidemiology of urinary stone disease in the United States, comparing the effectiveness of stone removal technologies, and identifying opportunities to improve patient-centered outcomes. He leads a health services and clinical research program at the Duke Clinical Research Institute as Principal Investigator for the Scientific Data and Research Center of the NIDDK Urinary Stone Disease Research Network. In this role he directs the multicenter Prevention of Urinary Stones with Hydration randomized clinical trial and the Study to Enhance Understanding of Stent-Associated Symptoms cohort study. He also serves as an affiliate faculty member of the Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy and teaches in the Duke Master of Management in Clinical Informatics program.
