Professor Chee Hing Tan is a member of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Sheffield. He holds a BEng in Electronic Engineering - Communications and a PhD in Electronic Engineering, both from the University of Sheffield. He began his academic career at the university as an undergraduate in 1996 and has been an academic member of staff since 2003. His roles have included Head of Department for Electrical and Electronic Engineering from February 2019 to September 2024, and he currently serves as Theme Lead for Materials and Devices and Academic Line Manager for academics in Semiconductor Materials and Devices. He is Professor of Opto-Electronic Sensors.
Professor Tan’s research focuses on avalanche photodiodes with electron-only ionisation, single photon avalanche diodes, high-speed avalanche photodiodes for optical communications, multi-colour detectors, high-sensitivity infrared detectors across NIR to VLWIR bands, and improved energy resolution for soft X-ray detection. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and co-founder of Phlux Technology, a university spinout company. His work has contributed to advances in semiconductor materials and devices for sensing applications.
