Rate My Professor Chen Zhang

Chen Zhang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University. He received his B.E. in Electronic Science and Technology from Tianjin University in 2012 and his Ph.D. in Industrial Systems Engineering and Management from the National University of Singapore in 2017. Prior to joining Tsinghua University, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the School of Information Systems, Singapore Management University from 2017 to 2018. At Tsinghua, he was appointed Assistant Professor in 2018, promoted to Associate Professor without tenure in 2020, and became a tenured Associate Professor in 2026.

His research interests include time series analysis, causal inference, multi-modal large language models, engineering-driven system modeling, monitoring and control, spatiotemporal learning for networked and distributed systems, and adaptive sensing and resource-constrained decision making. Chen Zhang has received numerous honors, including the Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researchers award in 2024, selection for the 8th China Association for Science and Technology Young Talent Support Program from 2022 to 2024, the Ministry of Education Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award (Science and Technology) – Second Prize in 2023, the Brumbaugh Award from the American Society for Quality in 2019, and the Singapore Semiconductor Gold Medal in 2018. He has also earned multiple best paper awards and finalists from INFORMS, IISE Transactions, and IEEE conferences, as well as teaching excellence recognitions at Tsinghua University. His work has been published extensively in journals such as IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IISE Transactions, INFORMS Journal on Computing, and Technometrics.
