Professor Chongzhi Duan, also known as Rocky Tuan Sung-chi, serves as Emeritus 8th Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Born in 1951 in Hong Kong, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Berea College in 1972, a PhD in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from The Rockefeller University in 1977, and completed postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. His career includes positions at the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University, Drexel University, the National Institutes of Health, Georgetown University, George Washington University, and the University of Pittsburgh, where he held roles such as Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Director of the Center for Cellular and Molecular Engineering, and Professor of Bioengineering.
Professor Duan’s research focuses on the human musculoskeletal system, with specializations in stem cell biology, biomaterials, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. He has directed multidisciplinary programs in orthopaedic research and served as Director of the Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at CUHK. Key appointments include Lee Quo Wei Lee Yick Hoi Lun Professor of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at CUHK. He received the Marshall Urist Award for Excellence in Regeneration Research in 2004 and is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering as well as the American Association of Anatomists. Professor Duan has held leadership positions in numerous academic and professional organizations and contributed to major publications in his field through extensive research output on stem cells, biomaterials, and tissue regeneration.
