Christopher R. Madan is an Assistant Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Nottingham. He completed his PhD in Psychology at the University of Alberta in 2014, which included a visiting scientist position at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, and subsequently held a postdoctoral research fellowship at Boston College.
His research combines cognitive psychology approaches with neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI and EEG, along with computational modelling. He investigates factors that influence the memorability of experiences, including emotion, motivation, and pre-existing semantic knowledge, and examines how these factors affect future decisions. Dr. Madan also specializes in characterizing inter-individual differences in brain morphology in relation to aging, dementia, and cognitive abilities. He has received the 2021 Early Career Award from the Psychonomic Society and the 2017 Rising Star award from the Association for Psychological Science. He is a Fellow of the Psychonomic Society and AdvanceHE, and a member of the Memory Disorders Research Society. Dr. Madan serves as an associate editor for Behavior Research Methods and as a consulting editor for Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, with additional editorial contributions to the Journal of Open Source Software and Collabra: Psychology. He has authored over 150 journal articles and four books, including An Introduction to Matlab for Behavioural Researchers (2014, Sage), Memories that Matter (2024, Routledge), and the book series Academia and the World Beyond (2021, Springer).
