About Christopher

Professor Christopher Shaw is Professor of Neurology and Neurogenetics at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London and Director of the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute. He trained in general medicine and neurology in New Zealand before completing doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge as a Wellcome Trust Fellow. He joined King’s College London in 1995, where his research has focused on the genetic, molecular, and cellular basis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). His group has identified mutations in genes including TARDBP and FUS that cause ALS and has advanced understanding of proteostatic mechanisms and gene therapy approaches for these conditions.

Shaw is a Group Leader at the UK Dementia Research Institute at King’s and previously served as its Centre Director. He holds honorary consultant positions as a neurologist and neurogeneticist at King’s College Hospital. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2010 and has received awards including the Sheila Essey Award and the Kea World Class New Zealand Award. Key publications include reports on TDP-43 mutations in Science (2008) and FUS mutations in Science (2009). He co-founded the spin-out company AviadoBio to develop gene therapies for neurodegenerative diseases.
