About Chunlei

Chunlei Guo is a Professor of Optics and Professor of Physics at the University of Rochester. He also serves as a Senior Scientist in the Laboratory for Laser Energetics and holds an appointment as Professor in Materials Science. Guo received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Connecticut in 1999 and was later named one of the university’s 40 Under 40 Outstanding Alumni. He completed postdoctoral training at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where his work received the Postdoctoral Publication Prize in Experimental Sciences. He joined the faculty of the University of Rochester in 2001.

Guo’s research centers on femtosecond laser-matter interactions at high intensities. His work at Rochester has produced discoveries of highly functionalized surfaces, including black and colored metals as well as superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces with potential technological applications. He is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society and Optica. Guo has authored approximately 370 refereed journal publications and delivered more than 200 plenary, keynote, and invited talks, including presentations on the TED stage. He has held editorial positions such as Editor-in-Chief of the CRC Handbook of Laser Technology and Applications (2nd ed.), Editor of Light: Science & Applications, and Associate Editor of Optics Express. Guo has also served on numerous conference committees and steering committees in the fields of optics and laser technology. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses including Ultrafast Optics and Laser-Matter Interactions, Principles of Lasers, and Optics Laboratory.
