About Dan

Dan Li serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science and Technology at the National University of Singapore, a position she has held since March 2025. She previously worked as Assistant Professor in the same department from June 2018 to March 2025. In addition, she has been Associate Director of the Faculty Research Centre on Sustainable Urban Farming Research at NUS since January 2022. Her academic background includes a PhD in Bioengineering from Ghent University in Belgium, completed between 2009 and 2012, an MSc in Food Science from Ocean University of China earned from 2007 to 2009, and a Bachelor in Food Science and Engineering from the same institution between 2003 and 2007. Prior to her roles at NUS, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow funded by the Research Foundation Flanders at Ghent University from January 2013 to May 2018. She also held visiting scholar positions supported by the same foundation at Nantes University in France from September 2014 to November 2014 and at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in the United States from May 2011 to October 2011. Her research focuses on the detection and mitigation of foodborne viruses as well as microbial safety of urban agriculture systems, along with sustainable antimicrobial strategies to enhance food safety and quality.

Throughout her career, Dan Li has contributed to advancements in food microbial safety, drawing on her expertise developed across institutions in Belgium, China, France, and the United States. Her appointments reflect a progression from postdoctoral research to tenure-track and now associate professor roles at a leading university. As part of her professional responsibilities, she oversees aspects of sustainable urban farming research initiatives at NUS while maintaining active engagement in her primary field of study within the Faculty of Science.
