Dan Shugar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth, Energy and Environment in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary, where he also serves as Director of the Environmental Science Program. He completed a BSc Hons in Physical Geography at Carleton University in 2003, an MSc in Physical Geography at the University of Guelph in 2005, and a PhD in Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University in 2011. Shugar is a geomorphologist whose research examines rapid geologic change in high-altitude and high-latitude environments, with a primary emphasis on climate change impacts in glacial and mountain landscapes. He leads the waterSHED Lab and maintains research interests in glaciology, geomatics, and natural hazards.
Shugar holds appointments as Associate Professor and Director of the Environmental Science Program at the University of Calgary since 2019. He has been recognized with the NSERC Emerging Research Leader Award and the Early Career Research Excellence Award from the University of Calgary Faculty of Science in 2021. His work contributes to understanding Earth surface evolution across diverse landscapes and time scales, particularly in response to contemporary climate change.
