Professor Darren Ashcroft holds the Foundation Chair in Pharmacoepidemiology at the University of Manchester and serves as Director of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Greater Manchester Patient Safety Translational Research Centre. He graduated with a BPharm (Hons) from the University of Nottingham in 1993, obtained an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy with Distinction from Queen’s University of Belfast in 1996, and completed a PhD at the University of Aston in 1999. He was appointed Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Manchester in 2002, promoted to Reader in Medicines Usage and Safety in 2007, and became Foundation Professor of Pharmacoepidemiology in 2010. Ashcroft is also an Honorary Professor at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Hong Kong.
His research focuses on medication safety, the safe use of medicines, and patient safety, including leading studies on the frequency and causes of medication errors and developing interventions to improve prescribing practices. He directs the NIHR Greater Manchester Patient Safety Translational Research Centre, integrating research across NHS trusts and universities to enhance patient safety. Ashcroft contributes to national bodies including the NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme, NICE committees, the MHRA Pharmacovigilance Expert Advisory Group, and the NIHR School for Primary Care Research Board. He was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 2016 and has held leadership roles in pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety research for over two decades.
