About David

Dr. David R. Anderson is a hematologist, professor of medicine, and dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, a position he has held since July 1, 2015. Born and raised in Halifax, he graduated from Dalhousie Medical School with an MD in 1983. He completed an internal medicine residency at Dalhousie University and pursued additional training in hematology at McMaster University, where he held a research fellowship in thromboembolic disease.

In 1992, Dr. Anderson returned to Nova Scotia and joined the QEII Health Sciences Centre as a staff hematologist while beginning his academic career at Dalhousie Medical School as an assistant professor. Prior to his appointment as dean, he served as head and district chief of the shared Dalhousie/Nova Scotia Health Authority Department of Medicine, during which time the department developed a strategic plan leading to new initiatives in clinical care, education, and research. He was appointed assistant dean of clinical research at Dalhousie Medical School in 2010 and chaired the Department of Medicine’s research committee for nearly ten years. Dr. Anderson’s clinical interests focus on the care of patients with hematological disorders, particularly those involving blood clotting problems. His research interests include hematology, hematologic disorders, and thromboembolic disorders. He is a member of the VECTOR research group, a national team focused on patients with thromboembolic disorders, and participates in a Maritime-based clinical research initiative emphasizing patient-oriented research. He is a founding member and former chair of the VECTOR Research Group, which has received more than $50 million in funding for studies on blood clotting disorders. Dr. Anderson has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications. He has served on numerous university and hospital committees and worked with the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness as clinical advisor for the Nova Scotia Blood Program and in developing the academic funding plan process for clinical departments. His professional designations include MD, FRCPC, and FACP.
