David Demeter is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Computer Science at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering. He earned his PhD in computer science from Northwestern University in 2020, with a master’s degree in applied mathematics. His doctoral research, advised by Professor Doug Downey, focused on the composition of neural models and analyzing the role of natural language in neural-symbolic models.
Demeter joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Instruction in 2023 after serving as a postdoctoral fellow. He serves as Associate Director of the Center for Deep Learning and teaches courses including COMP_SCI 461: Large Language Models. He is also a member of the core faculty team for Northwestern’s new AI major, which begins in fall 2026. His research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing.
