About David

Professor David Hodell is the Woodwardian Professor of Geology in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge, a position he has held since October 2008. He also serves as Director of the Godwin Laboratory for Palaeoclimate Research and is a Fellow of Clare College. Prior to joining Cambridge, he was a faculty member at the University of Florida from 1986 to 2008, where he attained the rank of full professor in geological sciences and directed the Stable Isotope Laboratory from 1996 to 2008.

Hodell earned a Bachelor of Arts in geology from the University of Vermont in 1980 and a Ph.D. in oceanography from the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island in 1986. His research focuses on palaeoclimatology, palaeoceanography, and palaeolimnology, utilizing high-resolution records from marine and lacustrine sediments as well as speleothems to reconstruct past climate dynamics. He has led numerous drilling expeditions under the International Ocean Discovery Program and field programs to recover sediment cores from locations including the North and South Atlantic, the Iberian Margin, Mesoamerica, and other regions. Key contributions include studies demonstrating the role of drought in the Classic Maya collapse and advancements in understanding Quaternary ice age cycles and millennial-scale climate variability. Hodell was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2024, named an AAAS Fellow in 2020, and awarded the Milutin Milanković Medal by the European Geosciences Union in 2018. He is available to supervise doctoral students.
