About David

David J. Lowe is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Science at the University of Waikato. He retired from the university after 18 June 2024 and was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor, conferred in 2025. He holds a PhD from the University of Waikato, along with BSc and MSc degrees from the same institution. Lowe is an experienced geoscientist with wide-ranging interests in Earth sciences. He specialises in tephrochronology, pedology, and Quaternary science, with the first two disciplines centred on tephra deposits.

Lowe was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand (FRSNZ) in 2010 and is also a Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Soil Science (FNZSSS). He has contributed to research projects including a Marsden Fund grant as principal investigator on "New views from old..." and work on tephra seismites for assessing seismic hazards. His research has addressed topics such as the stratigraphy, age, composition, and correlation of late Quaternary tephras interbedded with organic sediments in Waikato lakes. Lowe has held appointments including Associate Professor in Earth Sciences at the University of Waikato and has been involved in funded research on hidden faults and seismic risk in the Hamilton area.
