About David

Dr David Robertshaw is a Registered Nurse, Nurse Educator, and senior higher education leader at the University of Derby. He serves as Head of School for Nursing and Midwifery, leading a team of more than 130 nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals in delivering undergraduate and postgraduate health and care programmes. David joined the University of Derby in 2013 and has held various roles since then. His clinical background is in intensive care nursing. He holds a BA (Hons) in Nursing Studies (Adult) from Sheffield Hallam University, an MSc in Critical Care from Cardiff University, a PGCert in Interprofessional Practice Education from the University of Derby, and a PhD from the University of Derby. His doctoral thesis examined the contribution of a Massive Open Online Course on Dementia to dementia care and pedagogy. David is a registered nurse and nurse teacher with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health. He is also a member of the British Association of Critical Care Nurses and the Royal College of Nursing.

David’s research interests centre on massive open online courses, online learning, technology-enhanced learning, dementia, social change, and workforce transformation in health and care. He has published multiple peer-reviewed articles on these topics, including works on integrated care for dementia, MOOC participant experiences, and attitudes towards nursing. His research on MOOCs has informed international public health policy and research in other disciplines. David has developed more than 60 degree programmes, apprenticeships, and other educational offerings in partnership with employers and regulatory bodies. He supervises PhD students on topics including nurse education transitions and experiences in health and social care. David has delivered presentations at national and international conferences and has contributed to quality assurance processes as an NMC Visitor.
