About David

Professor David Torpy is Professor of Medicine at the University of Adelaide School of Medicine and Senior Endocrinologist and Deputy Director of the Endocrine and Metabolic Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he also serves as Head of the Endocrinology Unit. He holds an MBBS from the University of Adelaide (1984), a PhD from the University of Queensland (1996), and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (1991). His research focuses on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and stress physiology, with particular emphasis on corticosteroid-binding globulin genetic variants, immune-HPA interactions in inflammatory states, adrenal function in septic shock, maternal cortisolaemia in complicated pregnancies, inherited adrenal dysfunction, adrenocortical carcinoma, opioids and adrenal function, the stress axis in hypoglycaemia unawareness, and cortisone dosing in Addison’s disease.

Professor Torpy was appointed Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide in 2002 and promoted to Professor in 2012. He has received the Prof Derek Frewin AO Citation for Clinical Teaching from the University of Adelaide in 2012. He maintains active clinical and research roles at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and contributes to publications on topics including septic shock therapies, adrenal insufficiency, and pituitary disorders.
