About Deborah

Deborah Glencross is a Research Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand. She holds the qualifications MB BCh, MMed (Haem) and DSc (Med) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Glencross serves as Research Professor and Chief Pathologist, heading the Flow Cytometry Unit in the Department of Molecular Medicine and Haematology, with a joint appointment at the National Health Laboratory Service. Her research specializations center on flow cytometry applications in immunohaematology, including the development and implementation of Panleucogated CD4 testing for HIV immune monitoring. In 2022 she was awarded a Doctor of Science degree by Wits for her thesis entitled “Panleucogated (PLG) CD4 HIV Immune Monitoring: Transformation of Human Resources for Health in South Africa.”

Glencross has contributed extensively to laboratory services supporting South Africa’s national HIV programme. She received the National Science and Technology Forum Award in 2004 for research and innovation, the Dira Sengwe Leadership Award in 2013 for contributions to the South African HIV programme, and an honourable mention Lifetime Achievement Award from the African Society of Laboratory Medicine in 2016. She maintains an active publication record with over 220 peer-reviewed articles and substantial citation impact in her field. Glencross has held leadership roles in national laboratory initiatives and continues to advance diagnostic capacity in haematology and immunology through her positions at Wits and the NHLS.
