About Denise Helena Silva

Denise Helena Silva Duarte is a Full Professor (Professora Titular MS-6) in the Department of Technology at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism and Design of the University of São Paulo (FAUUSP), where she has been affiliated since 1999. She serves as President of the Graduate Committee at FAUUSP and has previously coordinated the Graduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism (PPGAU/FAUUSP) from 2021 to 2025, as well as serving as vice-head of the Department of Technology in two terms. She holds a CNPq Productivity Fellowship (Bolsista de Produtividade CNPq) and is a Visiting Professor in the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree on Urban Climate and Sustainability (MUrCS, Erasmus+/EU).

Her academic background includes a degree in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Mato Grosso (1992), a degree in Music from the Brazilian Conservatory of Music (1991), a Master’s degree in Architecture from USP/EESC (1995), and both a PhD (2000) and Livre-docência (2015) in Architecture and Urbanism from FAUUSP. Her research focuses on urban microclimates, environmental comfort, energy efficiency in buildings and cities, the impacts of vegetation and urban density on urban climates, and adaptation of cities and buildings to climate change, often through interdisciplinary projects funded by FAPESP, CNPq, CAPES, and USP. She has contributed to public policy in São Paulo and São José dos Campos and served as an Expert Reviewer for the IPCC AR6 WGII Contribution and as Lead Author for the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities (SRCities, AR7). She has held editorial roles with journals including Pós (FAUUSP), and currently serves on editorial committees for several international architecture and urbanism publications. She is a member of organizations such as PLEA and IAUC and coordinates or participates in multiple international research collaborations on urban resilience and nature-based solutions.
