About Derek

Professor Derek John Hausenloy is the Tanoto Foundation Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He holds the position of Professor in the Cardiovascular & Metabolic Disorders Signature Programme at Duke-NUS Medical School. He also serves as Director of the National Heart Research Institute Singapore (NHRIS) at the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS), where he is a Senior Consultant in the Department of Cardiology. Additionally, he is Professor at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, University College London, and Academic Vice Chair (Research) of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Cardiovascular Sciences Academic Clinical Programme since May 2021.

His academic background includes a PhD from University College London in 2004, an MBChB (Honours) from the University of Manchester in 1996, and a BSc in Biomedical Sciences (First Class Honours) in 1993. Professor Hausenloy conducts basic, translational, and clinical research focused on ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, cardioprotection, and cardiac MRI, with a primary emphasis on developing novel therapies to protect the heart against acute ischaemia/reperfusion injury and heart failure. He has led more than 40 research grants totaling over $40 million and authored over 400 scientific papers. His honors include the NMRC STaR Investigator Award in 2021, the Duke-NUS Dean’s Excellence Award in Research in 2019, recognition as a Highly Cited Researcher in 2018, 2020, and 2021, and a Doctor Honoris Causa from Semmelweis University in 2019. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the European Society of Cardiology, the American College of Cardiology, and the International Society of Heart Research. Professor Hausenloy chairs the EU-CARDIOPROTECTION COST Action and is a member of the ESC Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science.
