About Derek

Professor Derek Irvine is Professor of Materials Chemistry in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham, where he is based in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. He is a member of the Centre for Additive Manufacturing Research group. Prior to joining the university, he held various research positions at ICI from 1990 to 2006, during which he established and led multidisciplinary teams focused on novel polymer synthesis, catalysis, and processing. His industrial work resulted in 38 refereed journal publications, 20 patent applications, and the commercial launch of 10 products, including Lucite SWES TM and Lucite GRA TM, which are based on controlled radical polymerisation and generate significant annual sales revenue. He received ICI Awards for Innovation in 1998, 2002, and 2003, won the ICI Sustainability Award in 2002, and was appointed to the ICI Scientific Ladder in 2001.

In 2006, Derek Irvine was appointed as an Associate Professor within the DICE initiative at the University of Nottingham, a joint appointment between the Schools of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. His expertise encompasses the application of polymer synthesis and related technologies, with experience in overcoming challenges in scale-up from laboratory to commercial processes. He continues to contribute to research in materials chemistry, including recent publications on topics such as polymerisation techniques, additive manufacturing, and functional materials.
