Dongwook Yoon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Science. He earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2017 and his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Seoul National University in 2009 and 2007, respectively. Yoon’s research centers on Human-Computer Interaction, with a focus on building rich collaboration systems that support expressive multimodal interactions and on enhancing computer-mediated social interactions to make them richer, more inclusive, and more humane. He assesses user needs in socio-technical systems and addresses them through novel design interventions. He is a member of the Designing for People (DFP) group and CAIDA at UBC. Yoon teaches courses including Human Computer Interaction and Topics in Human-Computer Interaction. His work has received multiple recognitions, including the 2023 CHCCS/SCDHM Graphics Interface Early Career Researcher Award, a Google Academic Research Award, a High Impact Award, Best Paper Awards, and Honorable Mention Awards at conferences such as CHI and Designing Interactive Systems (DIS). He has also received an Impact Recognition Award. Yoon’s research and training programs receive support from UBC, NSERC, KIST, Adobe, and Microsoft. His overarching goal is to address problem domains where technology design does not align with social processes.
Yoon joined the University of British Columbia following his doctoral studies and has progressed to the rank of Associate Professor. His contributions emphasize practical applications in social computing and computer-supported cooperative work, with influence demonstrated through extensive citations in the academic community. He participates in departmental activities such as curriculum development in human-computer interaction topics.
