Professor Dori Posel is a professor in the School of Economics and Finance at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she holds the Helen Suzman Chair in Political Economy as a distinguished professor. She joined the university in 2016. Her academic qualifications include a BSc, BScHons and MEcon, as well as a DEcon from the University of Massachusetts. Posel specialises in applied micro-economic research that explores the interface between households and labour markets. Her work addresses topics including marriage, migration, gender, labour economics, economic demography and wellbeing in South Africa.
Prior to her appointment at the University of the Witwatersrand, Posel held a South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) position at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is an elected member of relevant academic bodies and has participated in high-level discussions on economic policy, including contributions related to job creation and household dynamics. Posel has been recognised as a finalist for major South African science awards for her contributions to economic research on households, marriage, migration, gender and wellbeing.
