Eduardo Luís Hettwer Giehl is an adjunct professor in the Department of Ecology and Zoology at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in 2004, followed by a master’s degree in 2007 and a doctorate in 2011, both in Botany from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. In his current role, he serves as the principal investigator of the Laboratório de Diversidade & Conservação and coordinates the Graduate Program in Ecology at UFSC.
His research focuses on patterns of diversity, statistical modeling, macroecology, niche retention, process-based modeling, phylogenetic community structure and assembly, riparian forests, species-environment relationships, natural disturbances, and the spatial distribution of plants. He also develops tools for data analysis in the R programming environment. Giehl’s work contributes to understanding biodiversity patterns and conservation in Brazilian ecosystems, including grasslands, forests, and highland fields.
