About Edwin

Professor Edwin van Teijlingen is Professor of Reproductive Health at Bournemouth University in the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. Trained as a medical sociologist, he specialises in mixed-methods research, qualitative research and evaluation research, with extensive work in public health, health promotion and the organisation of maternity care. He has conducted large-scale comparative studies using interdisciplinary and mixed-methods approaches and has evaluated major community-based public health interventions in Scotland funded by the Chief Scientist Office, the Wellcome Trust and NHS Health Scotland. His research interests encompass epidemiology, maternal health, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, migration health and health services research. Much of his international work focuses on Nepal, including collaborative projects with Green Tara Nepal and Tribhuvan University on improving access to research literature and examining the impact of federalisation on Nepal’s health system, supported by funders such as the MRC, Wellcome Trust and DFID.

He has a strong publication record, experience as a peer reviewer for journals including PLOS and BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, and has contributed to grant writing and research capacity building. In 2021 he received Recognised Research Supervisor status from the UK Council for Graduate Education. Professor van Teijlingen previously worked as a lecturer in public health, a public health officer and a medical laboratory technologist. He currently serves as a Research Staff Association Representative for the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and contributes to projects on maternity organisation and culture in the NHS as well as midwifery education in Nepal.
