About Elias

Dr Elias Rugen is a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton. He previously completed a PhD in the Department of Earth Sciences at University College London, where his project focused on understanding Earth's carbon cycle through perturbations in the Precambrian. His research specializations include isotope geochemistry, stable isotopes, carbon isotopes, carbon cycle, and carbonate sedimentology, with particular emphasis on Precambrian geology and records of Snowball Earth events.

Dr Rugen has worked extensively on the Garvellach Islands in Scotland, contributing to studies of exceptionally preserved Cryogenian glacial deposits. He is a co-author on the 2026 paper 'Ancient rocks reveal annual climate cycles during Snowball Earth' published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, which presents evidence of annual, decadal, and centennial climate oscillations during the Sturtian glaciation based on varved sediments. Additional publications include a 2024 paper in the Journal of the Geological Society on glacially influenced provenance and Sturtian affinity from detrital zircon U–Pb ages in the Port Askaig Formation, and a 2025 paper on early basin development of the Dalradian Supergroup. His work has been featured in university news releases highlighting the implications for understanding climate system resilience during extreme conditions.
