Professor Elmi Muller serves as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University, a position she has held since January 2022. She is the first woman appointed to this role at the institution. Prior to her appointment at Stellenbosch University, she held positions at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, where she served as Head of the Division of General Surgery and Head of the Transplant Unit. Muller graduated with an MBChB from the University of Pretoria in 1995. She later obtained an MMed in Surgery in 2007 and a PhD in Surgery in 2018, both from the University of Cape Town. She is a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa, a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, and was awarded Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons in 2013.
Muller is a transplant surgeon specializing in kidney and liver transplantation for both adults and children. She pioneered the world’s first HIV-positive-to-positive kidney transplant program at Groote Schuur Hospital, with outcomes published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Her research focuses on organ transplantation, including living and deceased donation, healthcare access, and equitable organ allocation systems in South Africa. She previously served as President of the Southern African Transplantation Society and is Vice-President of The Transplantation Society. Muller has received multiple awards, including the Transplantation Society’s Women in Transplant Hero Award in 2016, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Lund University. She has contributed to international guidelines through roles such as co-chair of the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group and has been involved in training and education programs across Africa.
