About Eloísa

Eloisa Silva Dutra de Oliveira Bonfá is a full professor in the Rheumatology Division at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP). She graduated in Medicine from the Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto da USP in 1981 and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the same institution. She undertook a research fellowship and served as Junior Faculty at the Hospital for Special Surgery, affiliated with Cornell University in New York, under the supervision of Professor Keith Elkon. In 1991, she earned her Doctor of Medical Sciences degree from FMUSP with a thesis on autoantibodies in chronic Chagas disease. She was appointed full professor (professora titular) at FMUSP in 1998.

Bonfá has served as Director of FMUSP, the first woman in that role, for the term 2022–2026, and previously held the position of Clinical Director of the Hospital das Clínicas da FMUSP for more than a decade. She is a full member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina, elected in 2023, and has received the Master title from the American College of Rheumatology. Her research focuses on biological therapies, systemic lupus erythematosus, and autoantibodies. She has authored over 400 articles in national and international journals and has supervised numerous undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral students.
