About Elson

Elson Longo da Silva is Professor Emérito and Titular in the Departamento de Química at Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar), where he also serves as Director of the Centro de Desenvolvimento de Materiais Funcionais (CDMF), a CEPID supported by FAPESP. He earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) in 1969, followed by a master’s degree in Physical Chemistry in 1975 and a doctorate in Physical Chemistry in 1984, both from the Universidade de São Paulo (USP). His research focuses on physical chemistry, with emphasis on semiconductor materials, sensors, varistors, nanotechnology, thin films, luminescent materials, and catalysis. Longo has authored or co-authored more than 1,300 peer-reviewed articles and maintains strong international collaborations with institutions in Spain, France, the United States, and Italy. He has supervised or co-supervised over 170 theses and dissertations and led more than 42 research projects and agreements with federal and state governments as well as industry partners.

Longo is a full member of the Academia Brasileira de Ciências and the Academia de Ciências do Estado de São Paulo. He received the Comenda da Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico, the title of Professor Honoris Causa from Universidade Federal da Paraíba, and the Prêmio Ciência e Tecnologia de São Carlos in 2019. He has been recognized as the top Brazilian academic in chemistry rankings by Research.com, with an h-index exceeding 100 and tens of thousands of citations. Longo previously held positions at UNESP and maintains affiliations with UFSCar’s graduate programs in chemistry and materials engineering.
