Professor Tan Eng Chye serves as the fifth President of the National University of Singapore (NUS), a position he has held since 1 January 2018. A mathematician by training, he joined NUS in 1985 as a Senior Tutor in the Department of Mathematics. He earned a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Mathematics from NUS and subsequently obtained a Master of Science and a PhD in Mathematics from Yale University. Prior to his presidency, Professor Tan held several key leadership roles at NUS, including Dean of the Faculty of Science from June 2003 to March 2007 and Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost until 2017. His research interests lie in the representation theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras, as well as invariant theory and algebraic combinatorics.
Throughout his career, Professor Tan has been instrumental in shaping NUS’s academic landscape through initiatives such as the University Town Residential College Programme, technology-enhanced education, the Centre for Future-ready Graduates, and the School of Continuing and Lifelong Education. He received the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 2014 for his contributions to education. Professor Tan serves on the boards of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the National Research Foundation, and he is a member of Singapore’s Future Economy Council. He has also held the position of Chair of Universitas 21.
