About Eric

Eric L. Barker serves as Vice President for Health Affairs and Jeannie and Jim Chaney Dean of Pharmacy at Purdue University, where he is also Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. He earned a B.S. from St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1988 and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1993. He completed postdoctoral training at Emory University from 1993 to 1995 and at Vanderbilt University from 1995 to 1997. His research focuses on the molecular pharmacology of antidepressant- and cocaine-sensitive serotonin transporters as well as endogenous cannabinoid transport, employing techniques such as expression of cloned transporters in mammalian cells, electrophysiology, immunoblotting, chimeric proteins, and site-directed mutagenesis to examine structural determinants of transporter function and pharmacology. Prior to his current roles, Barker served as associate dean for research in the College of Pharmacy and was promoted to vice president for health affairs effective July 1, 2024. In 2013, he received the Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award, Purdue University’s highest honor for undergraduate teaching. He is not currently accepting students into his laboratory.
