About Ernesto

Ernesto Goulart is a professor in the Department of Genetics and Evolutionary Biology at the Institute of Biosciences, Universidade de São Paulo. He holds a doctorate in Genetics from the Universidade de São Paulo, a master’s degree in Biological Sciences with a focus on Genetics and Biotechnology from the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, and a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from the same institution. His research centers on stem cells, tissue engineering, bioengineering, and advanced therapies, with particular emphasis on hepatic bioengineering using 3D bioprinting and liver organoids, as well as genetic engineering for xenotransplantation. He is affiliated with the Human Genome and Stem Cell Research Center (HUG-CELL) at USP and has conducted research as a visiting scholar in the Department of Bioengineering at Temple University under the guidance of Dr. Peter I. Lelkes. Goulart has contributed to studies on induced pluripotent stem cells, neural progenitor cells in the context of Zika virus, and applications of stem cell technology in modeling human liver function.

His work includes co-authorship on peer-reviewed publications such as a 2020 paper in Biofabrication on 3D bioprinting of liver spheroids derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells and a 2018 paper in Nature Communications on discordant congenital Zika syndrome twins. He is a member of the International Society for Stem Cell Research and has co-founded biotech startups focused on advanced therapies.
