About Esme

Esme Fuller-Thomson is a Professor in the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto and serves as Director of the Institute for Life Course and Aging. She is cross-appointed to the Department of Family & Community Medicine and the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. Dr. Fuller-Thomson earned a B.A. and a B.S.W. from McGill University and an M.S.W. and Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley. She joined the faculty at the University of Toronto in 1995.

Dr. Fuller-Thomson has published nearly 200 peer-reviewed articles. Her primary research focuses on the long-term health impacts of childhood maltreatment, grandparents raising grandchildren, and social determinants of disability among older adults. She teaches courses in gerontology, research methods, and evidence-based practice. Her work has appeared in leading journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, the American Journal of Public Health, and Social Work. Dr. Fuller-Thomson has served as an investigator on grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and other organizations. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and has received a Leadership Award from the Association for Gerontological Education in Social Work. Her research has been featured in major media outlets and informed policy discussions, including testimony to the U.S. Congress on housing for grandparent caregivers.
