About Eurico

Eurico de Arruda Neto is Full Professor of Virology in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology and Pathogenic Bioagents at the Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto, Universidade de São Paulo (FMRP-USP), a position he has held since 1997. He earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Ceará in 1982, a master’s degree in infectious diseases from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) in 1987, and a doctorate in infectious and parasitic diseases from UNIFESP in collaboration with the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1991. He completed postdoctoral training in virology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine from 1992 to 1993 and served as Research Assistant Professor of Virology in the Departments of Pathology and Internal Medicine there from 1993 to 1996.

Professor Arruda coordinates the Viral Pathogenesis Laboratory at the Virology Research Center of FMRP-USP. His research focuses on the pathogenesis, cellular biology, and persistence of human respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, as well as Oropouche virus and vertical transmission of viruses. He previously served as President of the FMRP-USP Research Committee from 2016 to 2020 and as Chairman of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology from 2020 to 2022. He was President of the Brazilian Society for Virology from 2013 to 2014 and is a member of the Membership Committee of the American Society for Virology. He has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology since 2014.
