Fakhreddine (Fakhri) Karray is Professor of Machine Learning at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI). He earned a Diplôme d'Ingénieur in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tunis, Tunisia, and a Ph.D. in Systems and Control from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA. Prior to joining MBZUAI, he held the Loblaws Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada, where he also served as the inaugural co-director of the AI Institute. He previously served as Provost of MBZUAI and is now Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo.
Professor Karray’s research interests include operational AI, multi-modal fusion transformers, and distributed agents architecture for generative AI, with applications in virtual healthcare systems, cognitive and self-aware machines, robots, and vehicles in smart cities, as well as predictive analytics in supply chain management and intelligent transportation systems. He is an IEEE Life Fellow, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and a Fellow of the Kavli Frontiers of Science. His honors include the 2021 IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Land Transportation Best Paper Award, the 2022 IEEE Communication Society’s International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking Best Paper Award, and the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Engineering Distinguished Performance Award in 2019. He is co-author of the textbooks Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems Design (Addison Wesley, 2004) and Elements of Dimensionality Reduction and Manifold Learning (Springer, 2022). He has published extensively in pattern analysis and machine intelligence and holds 20 U.S. registered patents. He is co-founder and Chief Scientist of Yourika.ai.
