About Faranak

Faranak Farzan is a Professor in the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering at Simon Fraser University. She holds a B.Eng. in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering from McMaster University, a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Science from the University of Toronto, and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cognitive Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Prior to joining Simon Fraser University, she served as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and as an Independent Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

Dr. Farzan is the Chair in Technology Innovations for Youth Addiction Recovery and Mental Health and the founder and Scientific Director of the Centre for Engineering-Led Brain Research at Simon Fraser University. Her research interests include neuromodulation technologies, brain stimulation technologies, bio-signal processing, electrophysiology, youth depression and addiction, precision medicine, artificial intelligence and big data for mental health applications, and VR/AR for mental health applications. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including "Brain Temporal Complexity in Explaining the Therapeutic and Cognitive Effects of Seizure Therapy" (Brain, 2017), "Standardization of Electroencephalography for Multi-Site, Multi-Platform and Multi-Investigator Studies" (Scientific Reports, 2017), and "Characterizing and Modulating Brain Circuitry through Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Combined with Electroencephalography" (Frontiers in Neural Circuits, 2016). Her work focuses on the development and implementation of neurotechnology and computational approaches for studying brain health and treating neuropsychiatric disorders.
