Rate My Professor Flávio Alicino Bockmann

Flávio Alicino Bockmann is Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Ribeirão Preto (FFCLRP) of the Universidade de São Paulo. He earned his bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Universidade Santa Úrsula between 1987 and 1990. He completed his PhD in Ciências Biológicas (Zoologia) at the Universidade de São Paulo in 1998, with the thesis titled “Análise Filogenética da família Heptapteridae (Teleostei, Ostariophysi, Siluriformes) e redefinição de seus gêneros,” supervised by Heraldo Antonio Britski and supported by FAPESP. In 1993, he was a Short Term Visitor at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, under the supervision of Richard Peter Vari. He undertook postdoctoral research at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro from 1999 to 2000, funded by FAPERJ, and obtained his livre-docência at FFCLRP/USP in 2011 with the work “Evolução e Sistemática Filogenética: uma Perspectiva da Morfologia Comparada.”

Bockmann’s research centers on zoology with emphasis on ichthyology, including taxonomy of recent groups, phylogenetic systematics, comparative morphology and anatomy of fishes, and biogeography, particularly within the order Siluriformes. His verified contributions include authorship or co-authorship of one book, fourteen book chapters, twenty-one specialized journal articles, and forty-two conference papers. He has supervised three master’s dissertations, five scientific initiation projects, and four undergraduate theses. He has coordinated and participated in multiple research projects and has presented at numerous national and international events, including meetings of the Brazilian Society of Ichthyology and international congresses on vertebrate morphology.
