About Florent

Florent Laroche is Maître de Conférences at the Faculté de Sciences Économiques et de Gestion of Université Lumière Lyon 2, a position he has held since 2016. He earned his PhD in Economics in 2014. His research focuses on transport economics, with particular emphasis on the analysis of rail systems for freight and passengers, network performance, market analysis and stakeholder strategies, new mobilities, the impact of digital technologies on lifestyles, and the ecological transition and forward-looking studies. He serves as head of the professional bachelor’s program in railway services management and teaches courses including transport economics, economics of sustainable development, railway economics, survey techniques, cost-benefit analysis, and ecological transition and mobility.

Laroche is a member of the scientific council of the Parc Naturel du Haut Jura and serves on the editorial boards of Frontiers in Future Transportation and the French journal Transports, Infrastructures & Mobilités. He received the Young Researcher Award from the International Journal of Transport Economics in 2018 for his paper on competition in the European rail freight market and the International Transport Forum’s Young Researcher of the Year Award in 2017. His publications include the 2025 book La face cachée de la sobriété and numerous peer-reviewed articles on topics such as open-access rail competition, the effects of COVID-19 on long-distance transport, intermodal competition in high-speed rail, and user satisfaction in regional rail services. He has also contributed to reports on the costs of the car system and rail network investments.
